McDonald's on Navajo Nation charges higher sales tax rate

A McDonald's on the Navajo Nation is charging a higher tax rate than other businesses on the reservation.

The location in Shiprock, New Mexico, is collecting a 5 percent tax for the tribe. But it's also collecting an additional 6.3 percent tax for San Juan County, bringing some sticker shock to customers on the reservation.

"Me being a Navajo, being on the reservation, they should just charge me the 5-percent tax," Randy Sells, who works for the Navajo Nation Regional Business Development Office in Shiprock, told The Farmington Daily Times.

Most business only collect the tribal tax. McDonald's didn't respond to the paper's request for comments.
