Tyme Maidu Tribe already held election over disenrollment

The Tyme Maidu Tribe of California was already receiving ballots for a pending disenrollment action before protesters destroyed them, The Chino News & Review reports.

The ballots were being held at the tribal headquarters when the protest occurred last week. Secretary Goodie Mix was surprised by the incident, saying the election could have gone in favor of the people who are facing disenrollment.

“There was a lot of sympathy for them before this happened,” Mix told the paper.

As a result of the protest, the tribe will mail out new ballots to its members. Mix said anyone who is subject to a disenrollment action is entitled to file an appeal.

The News & Review said 58 people are facing disenrollment while another paper put the number at more than 70.
