Native man guilty for death after being taunted with racial slur

A Native man from Saskatchewan was found guilty of manslaughter for the death of his roommate.

Jake Austin Lee Ottertail beat his roommate, Bert Haverkort, after a alcohol-fuel fight. Haverkort had taunted Ottertail with a racial slur, the judge handling the case said.

Haverkort told Ottertail to "calm down, you're going Native on me," Justice Mona Dovell said in court today, CBC News reported

Dovell acquitted Ottertail of the more serious charge of second-degree murder. She said he did not intend to kill Haverkort on the night of August 7, 2010.

Ottertail will be sentenced next month on the manslaughter charge.
