Editorial: Indian Country loses big leader in Gordon Belcourt

Montana newspaper mourns the passing of Gordon Belcourt, the longtime executive director of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council:
The state of Montana — and all of Indian Country — has a lost an influential leader.

Gordon Belcourt, executive director of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council from 1998 to the present, died Monday morning of natural causes at St. Vincent Healthcare. He was 68.

In his final days, Belcourt approached his death the same way he approached life and leadership — with courage and dignity.

Leaders throughout the state remembered Belcourt as a tough but personable statesman respected by local and state lawmakers and members of Congress.

He brought his personal ethic — of hard work, self-reliance and integrity — to everything he tackled. His record of accomplishment was unparalleled among his peers.
