Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe donates traditional canoe to NMAI

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is donating a traditional wood canoe to the National Museum of the American Indian.

The 16-foot-long mishoon was carved out of white pine. The wood itself was harvested using a traditional burning technique.

The entire process was filmed for a documentary that is also being donated to the NMAI. The boat will arrive at the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland, tomorrow.
