Judge sets oral arguments in Cherokee Nation Freedmen suit

A federal judge will hear arguments in the Cherokee Nation Freedmen dispute on April 28, 2014.

In an order on Tuesday, Judge Thomas Hogan set a briefing schedule for the tribe, the Freedmen plaintiffs and the Interior Department. Final briefs are due March 28, a month before the hearing.

The parties have asked Hogan for a ruling based on an 1866 treaty in which the tribe agreed that former African slaves, and their descendants, shall have "all the rights of native Cherokees."

The hearing will take place at 10am in Courtroom 25A of the federal court in Washington, D.C.
