Yankton Sioux Tribe already hit with cuts to assistance funds

The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has already stopped its general assistance and heating assistance programs due to the shutdown of the federal government.

The tribe has about a month of operating funds left, Vice Chairwoman Jean Archambeau said. Layoffs are possible.

“(Tribal families are) already turning to us as a tribe on how they can be helped. We don’t know yet,” Archambeau told the Associated Press.
