Pipeline spills 865K gallons of oil by North Dakota reservation

A pipeline has spilled more than 865,000 gallons of oil in North Dakota, upstream from the reservation of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.

Rancher Steve Jensen reported the ruptured pipeline on his property on September 29. But Tesoro Logistics didn't disclose the incident to the public for another 11 days.

“It is completely unacceptable that a company would have a release of this size and not know it. It’s just unconscionable. And the question is, how did that possibly occur?” Linda Daugherty, the deputy associate administrator for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, said at a public meeting, Forum News Service reported.

The spill occurred near Tioga, a town about 48 miles north of the reservation border.
