The Interior Board of Indian Appeals has dismissed challenges to a land consolidation plan for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California. The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's consolidation area and acquisition plan in June. Opponents -- including Santa Barbara County and several community groups -- believe the designation will lead to swifter approval of a controversial land-into-trust application for 1,400 acres. The tribe, however, withdrew the land consolidation plan. As a result, the IBIA said there was nothing to decide. The tribe is still pursuing the land-into-trust application and has a bill pending in Congress. Get the Story:
