County treasurer blamed Obama's re-election on 'Indians'

The treasurer in Yellowstone County, Montana, is refusing to step down even after he admitted sending racist e-mails from his government account.

The Billings Gazette obtained Treasurer Max Lenington's e-mails through a public information request. In one, he lambasted the re-election of President Barack Obama.

On November 13, 2012, a week after Obama's victory, Lenington said "there are more lesbians, queers, Indians, Mexicans and n——— than the rest of us!” The n-word was used in full, the Gazette reported.

Lenington doesn't plan to seek re-election in 2014. But he also said he won't resign unless the county buys out the remaining year of his term, a suggestion that was rejected on Tuesday.

American Indians and Alaska Natives make up about 4.3 percent of the county population.
