Editorial: Recognize contributions of tribes to culture in Maryland

Commissioners in Worcester County, Maryland, pay tribute to the tribes on the Eastern Shore:
As part of our Thanksgiving celebration, the Commissioners recognize that Worcester County has much for which to be truly grateful. In so doing, we would be remiss not to extend our gratitude to the ongoing influence of a group of people whose ancestors have helped shape the course of this nation and who have called the Eastern Shore home for hundreds of years. Today, this group continues to be an integral part of the fabric of American society: Native Americans.

Worcester County has a thriving Native American population whose presence can be felt in area schools, the communities and across the nation and the world, as they pass on their heritage and are living examples of what it means to serve. The Commissioners presented proclamations recognizing November as Native American Heritage Month.

What began at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States resulted in November being set aside as Native American Heritage Month.
