Judge orders release of residential school abuse records

The Canadian government has agreed to turn over files related to abuse at a residential school after a judge said the information should be released.

The Ontario Provincial Police substantiated abuse allegations at the St. Anne's Residential School. Several people were convicted in the 1990s for physically and sexually abusing Native students.

The government, however, refused to release the information as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. With the judge's decision, the documents can now be used to compensate former students of the school who suffered abuse.
