Cherokee Nation is latest to join InterTribal Buffalo Council

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has joined the InterTribal Buffalo Council and is studying whether to raise its own bison herd.

The tribe joined ITBC at the group's recent meeting. The Cherokees are the 59th tribe to join.

The Cherokee Nation’s acceptance into the InterTribal Buffalo Council is a very positive move in the bison acquisition process,” Gunter Gulager, the tribe's natural resources director, said in a press release. “As a member of this council, the tribe will have access to the bison within our country’s national parks and be able to call upon experts to aid in the development of a business plan that best suits the tribe.”

The tribe could raise bison for economic and cultural purposes, Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said.
