Four tribes are asking the city of Shawnee, Oklahoma, for more information about its request for sales taxes.
The city says the tribes should collect a 3 percent tax on the sale of goods to non-Indians.
But the
Absentee Shawnee
Tribe, the
Citizen
Potawatomi Nation, the
Kickapoo Tribe and the
Sac and Fox Nation say there are legal and factual issues that need to be addressed first.
“At first glance, your letter appears to be based on a number of incorrect premises, both factual and legal, that will need to be reviewed more carefully before we can meet to discuss your concerns," the tribes said to Mayor Wes Mainord, Countywide News reported.
The city claims it has lost revenue because tribes aren't collecting the tax. So far, however, no data has been provided.
Although Mainord has asked all four tribes to collect the tax, Chairman John A. Barrett of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has said the city is targeting his tribe and its businesses.
