Grand River Bands moving closer to federal recognition decision

The
Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians
in Michigan will finally receive an answer on its federal recognition petition.
The tribe started the process in 1994. The
Bureau of Indian Affairs
placed the petition on the "ready" list in March 1997 and finally placed it under "active consideration" in December 2013, meaning a proposed finding is on the way.
The tribe's ancestors signed the
1855 Treaty with the Ottawa and Chippewa
.
