Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes see $7.3M for buyback

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana expect to see $7.3 million as part of the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations.

The money will be used to acquire fractionated interests from willing sellers on the Flathead Reservation. All of the land will be returned to the tribe.

"Consolidating the Flathead Tribal land base is a way to preserve and sustain our Tribal nation into the future," the tribe said in an informational sheet in the tribal newspaper. "The restoration of lost lands is critical to our nation’s long-term survival and viability."

The tribe expects offers from the Interior Department to be made from April through June.
