Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate signs parole agreement with state

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate signed an agreement with the South Dakota Department of Corrections to allow tribal members to serve their parole on the reservation.

The pilot project requires the tribe and the state to monitor parolees. Previously, the state lacked jurisdiction when former inmates returned to the reservation.

In related news, a criminal justice oversight council will apply for a grant to address the high number of Native women in the state prison system.
