Ruth Ziolkowski, the woman who maintained her husband's massive Crazy Horse Memorial project, died on Wednesday. She was 87.

Ziolkowski came to the Black Hills in 1948 at the age of 24 as a volunteer for the project. She ended up marrying sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski two year later and vowed to carry on his legacy following his death in 1982.

The massive sculpture remains unfinished but as operator of the memorial, Ziolkowski added a museum, educational and training area, restaurant and gift shop to the site. She also established the Indian University of North America in partnership with the University of South Dakota.
