Road on Navajo Nation collapses after going without repairs

A road on the Navajo Nation finally collapsed after going without repairs for several months.

Parts of Navajo Route 367 were closed when they collapsed last September after heavy rains. The road was never completely fixed although a water pipeline was installed underneath.

The section with the pipeline was repaved. However, it appears that the work weakened the ground and the rest of the road collapsed sometime over the weekend.

"I already knew this was going to happen," Upper Fruitland Vice President Lenora Williams told The Farmington Daily Times.

Williams sent letters to the tribe, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Reclamation. Only the BIA responded to her requests to fix the road, she said.

Water service has since been turned off, affecting farmers and landowners on the reservation.
