Saginaw Chippewa Tribe denounces racist message from firm

YouTube: Phone call to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe

A top executive at a telecommunications left a voice mail filled with racist slurs and offensive language for the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan.

Kirk Shewchuck, the chief financial officer of ACD.net, had called the tribe's planning department to talk about a cell phone tower on trust land. But he apparently forgot to hang up the phone and can be heard making disparaging comments about Native people.

"In today's society, tolerance and mutual respect are still goals to be obtained and not what we assume we should have," Chief Steve Pego said in a press release. "That in itself is a sad reality. I would ask that all Native Americas and other minority groups stand with us in denouncing Mr. Kirk Shewchuck and ACD.net."

Shewchuck at one point referred to tribal members as "red men." Another person -- presumably a fellow employee -- made "whooping" sounds as they discussed punishing the tribe by tampering with their cell phone signals.
