A police officer who was fired by the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has been indicted in connection with a brutality incident. U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson announced the indictment today. Rebecca M. Sotherland, aka Becky Sotherland and Becki Sotherland, 32, was charged with deprivation of rights under color of law and assault with a dangerous weapon for an incident that drew widespread condemnation in Indian Country. "The indictment alleges that on Aug. 15, 2014, Sotherland, while acting under color of law, repeatedly deployed a Taser on the victim causing bodily injury to the victim," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a press release. "The alleged offense took place in Manderson, South Dakota." Onlookers shot video of Sotherland using her Taser on a victim whom KCSR identified as Jeffrey Eagle Bull, 32. He appears unresponsive yet Sotherland used the weapon at least 10 times in an effort to get him into her police vehicle. The tribe's police department suspended Sotherland immediately after the incident. She was fired on Friday, News Center 1 reported. "This woman officer needs to be arrested for attempted murder," tribal member Jeffrey Whalen wrote in an opinion piece for the Native Sun News.
