The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas dedicated the Kickapoo Diabetes Walking Trail on Saturday.

Billy Mills, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, joined the ceremony. The 76-year-old said he has struggled with diabetes throughout his life, even during his gold medal win during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

“I want us all to take the virtues and the values of our culture – and our traditions and spirituality – on our journey to defeat and control diabetes," Mills told tribal leaders and members who walked the half-mile trail, KHI News Service reported.

The tribe has seen an increase in diabetes, including among youth in elementary school, Chairman Steve Cadue said.
