The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to transfer 145 bison from Yellowstone National Park to the Fort Peck Tribes.

Officials said they were confident of the tribe's ability to host and protect the herd. The tribe previously received 63 bison from Yellowstone although the transfer was controversial among farmers and property owners.

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma also sought a share of the bison.
