The Blackfeet Nation of Montana might refile drunken driving charges against a former council member, Chairman Harry Barnes said. Shannon Augare was stopped last week by a tribal police officer. He was cited for DUI, eluding an officer and speeding. After the arrest, Augare accused the tribe of targeting him because he refused to recognize the police chief when he sat on the council. The charges were dropped due to a documentation oversight but Barnes said they could be resubmitted. “This began as a routine traffic stop and the officers involved had no idea who was being pulled over," Barnes said in a statement, The Great Falls Tribune reported. "We have found absolutely no political motivation from Blackfeet Law Enforcement or the Blackfeet Tribal Courts." Augare serves as a state senator but decided not to run for re-election. He was arrested last year for drunken driving and pleaded guilty in federal court and tribal court. Get the Story:
