Phyliss J. Anderson, the first woman to lead the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, is running for re-election and has drawn a slew of challengers for the tribe's top post.

Anderson won election as chief in 2011. She defeated incumbent Beasley Denson, who ran a paid advertisement in The Neshoba Democrat announcing his 2015 campaign.

"For the first time in 32 years, the tribe's growth has come to a standstill," Denson said.

Denson isn't the only one challenging Anderson. According to the paper, Austin Tubby, Billy G. Chickaway, Kevin J. Edwards, Robert Garcia Jr. and Stella York Willis also filed for the chief's post.

The election takes place June 9.
