The Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma is supporting a high school senior who wants to wear an eagle feather to her graduation ceremony next week.

Chief Chet Brooks said 18-year-old Hayden Layne Griffith has a right to wear the feather. But Caney Valley High School isn't budging on its policy.

As a member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians she wants to show pride for her culture," Brooks said in a press release.

The issue came up during a school board meeting last night. But no decision was made to address Hayden's case, according to news reports.

"I'm not trying to break or bend the 'rules,' although there really aren't any," Hayden said in a written statement. “I'm doing this because it's who I am, and it's what I believe in wholeheartedly. If there was another student facing the same issue I would stand with them and help them fight. Not only because it is what my family or I believe, but it's what my people believe.”

The graduation ceremony takes place May 21.
