The Senate Indian Affairs Committee approved S.986, the Albuquerque Indian School Act, at a business meeting this afternoon.

The bill requires the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place 11.11 acres in trust for the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. The land is a part of the former Albuquerque Indian School.

The 19 Pueblos own the land, which is located next to their Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The tribes plan to use the site to expand economic development opportunities but it can't be used for gaming due to a prohibition in the bill.

The bill is now ready for action on the Senate floor. The House version is H.R.1880 but it hasn't received a hearing.
