The Tule River Tribe of California will break ground on a 22-acre sports park.

The tribe received a special use permit from the Tulare County Planning Commission to develop the site outside of the reservation. Plans for the Hyder Ranch Sports Park include baseball/softball fields, a soccer field, picnic areas, a basketball court, vending booths and restrooms,

The tribe will build five homes on the site, which is located on the southeast corner of Reservation Road and Road 296, according to the county planning commission agenda. Plans for a much larger housing development were scrapped due to concerns about water quality.

"The proposed sports park will be located on 353.14 acres. The actual park will take up 22.3 acres," the tribe said in its May 2015 newsletter.

The first phase covers the three baseball/softball fields, three warm-up fields and a 69-space parking lot. The remaining work will start within five years, according to the newsletter.
