The Chemehuevi Tribe will reopen an elementary school on the reservation this fall.

The Chemehuevi Valley Elementary School in California closed in 2009. As a result, students have been boarding a ferry to attend school in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, a trip that takes more than an hour.

That will change come August. Students from kindergarten to fifth grade will be able to go to school much closer to their homes.

“It’s going to be a huge opportunity to work with our kids,” Dusti Rose Bacon, the tribe's education director, told The Havasu News-Herald.

Middle-school and high-school students were also being sent to school in Arizona. That will end this fall too because they are going to attend school in Needles, California.

About 60 students are affected by the change.
