A man from the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation in South Dakota was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison on two assault charges.

Derek Kennedy, 35, admitted that he assaulted his domestic partner on the reservation in June 2013. She was struck in the face and her jaw was broken in two places, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a press release.

Kennedy also admitted that he assaulted a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer who had been called to the couple's home in October 2014 in response to another incident involving the same victim.

Kennedy faced three other charges but those were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Judge Roberto A. Lange issued a sentence that was lower than the one sought by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
