Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is refusing to answer questions about the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline opposed by tribes and environmental groups.

Clinton has been asked repeatedly for her position on the project in the last couple of days. She's declining to answer, citing her past tenure as head of the Department of State.

"I will refrain from commenting, because I had a leading role in getting that process started, and I think that we have to let it run its course," Clinton said on the campaign trail, The Hill reported.

Clinton, who also served in the U.S. Senate, left the Obama administration in February 2013 without finalizing a decision on the pipeline. The project has remained in limbo amid concerns about the route.

Clinton's Democratic opponents -- Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley -- oppose the pipeline. Her Republican rivals support it.
