PINE RIDGE – Some 354 dancers made their way into the Daniel Stands Memorial arena in Pine Ridge on the two busiest nights of the 30th annual four-day Oglala Nation celebration that featured 20 drum groups from around the country a health fair, co-ed softball, women’s slow pitch, men’s fast pitch and junior little league and little league baseball along with three days of rodeo, horse races, golf tournaments, a carnival along with food booths in and outside the grounds that offered a variety of treats and activities for everyone.

Veterans helped lead the grand entry into the arena. We really wanted to express our appreciation for the men and women who served in the armed forces added Kevin Yellow Bird Steele, Oglala Nation committee chair.

Before Sunday evening’s grand entry, tribal president John Yellow Bird Steele took an opportunity to honor elder men and women from around the Oglala Lakota Nation including Newton Cummings, Richard Broken Nose, Mel Lone Hill, Dr. Elgin Bad Wound, Emma Pinky Plume and Tom Casey.

There was no drum contest, just a drum split for those drums participating including: Creekside, Porcupine, Elk Nation, Crazy Horse, Sons of the Oglala, Ironwood, White River Crossing, Pine Ridge Agency, Mahpiya Maza, Mighty Arrows, Peji to Wakpa, Little Sun, Southern Guns, KMD, Rockin K, Thunder River, Eagle Mountain, Red Leaf, Mid Noon, Denver Singers and Rattlin Blanket.
