A Native man who vowed to avenge the death of his mother has finally found some closure 39 years later.

Gary Wassaykeesic was 11 years old when he first confronted the man believed to be responsible for the death of Sophie Wassaykeesic in 1976. He finally caught up with the man in a hospital a few weeks ago and made his peace, CBC News reported.

"I don't have to do this any more, I don't have to concentrate on this any more," Wassaykeesic told CBC of the encounter. "The closure that I've been looking for, I got that. I'm free to do what I want now."

Wassaykeesic still wants police to look into his mother's death. Although it was ruled accidental, he doesn't think the man's connection to the incident was thoroughly investigated.

Wassaykeesic is from the Mishkeegogamang First Nation.
