A public school district on the South Dakota portion of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation will no longer use its "Midgets" mascot.

The McLaughlin School District used the mascot since 1929, The Aberdeen American News reported. But board members voted 3-1 on Tuesday to eliminate it after hearing from Little People of America.

"If you change your mascot, we believe McLaughlin will be nationally applauded for recognizing the rights and responding to the concerns of disabled and marginalized communities," the organization said in a letter to the district.

Students will help select a new mascot that will be introduced in 2016.
