Six members of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate in South Dakota have been indicted for stealing funds from the tribe.

An indictment accuses Carrie Godfrey, Gerald German Jr., Ann German, Calvin Max Sr., Gerald Heminger Jr. and Colette White of writing emergency assistance and home repair checks to themselves from June 2010 to March 2013. Their activities deprived needy tribal members of more than $50,000, according to the unsealed version of the document.

The alleged thefts occurred in the Big Coulee District on the reservation. Five of the six defendants are current and former members of the district's executive board while the last is an employee of the district.
