‘Crusaders’ is a dirty word to Islam

In the 1950s a contest was held at Holy Rosary Mission on the Pine Ridge Reservation to pick a mascot for the sports teams.

Tony Brave, Sr., picked the name “Crusaders” and the name was the winner. So from that day on the team became the Holy Rosary Mission Crusaders. When the school changed its name to Red Cloud Indian School the mascot name of “Crusaders” continued to hold its own.

Back in those days in the 1950s the word “Crusader” was a proud name that was indicative of the Christian soldiers marching to war against the Muslins in their own land. King Richard the Lion Heart of Great Britain rode into battle wearing the distinct cross of the Crusaders on the robe draped over his suit of armor.

But unbeknownst to the young boy who chose the name for the school there was an undercurrent of anger and hate against the Crusaders for invading and killing many thousands of Muslims. Of course this little bit of information was not available in the school’s text books.
