Leaders and members of the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation in Saskatchewan are considering a complete ban on alcohol in response to a homicide on the reserve.

Alcohol is already banned in multi-family dwellings, The Regina Leader-Post reported. Chief Rodger Redman said a wider ban is an option after the death of a 28-year-old man on New Year's Day.

“Our community is in shock,” Redman said at a press conference on Monday, The Leader-Post reported. “This is something we don’t experience regularly.

Redman said alcohol played a role in the death of Mario Kaiswatum, who was shot inside a home on the reserve. Maurice Maple, 55, has been charged with first degree murder.
