White Earth Nation certifies a dozen candidates for chairperson

Twelve people -- a field of five women and seven men -- are hoping to become the new leader of the White Earth Nation of Minnesota.

Tribal members will head to the polls on April 5 to narrow down the list. In the event one candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, that person will be serve as the next chairperson.

Otherwise, the top two candidates will advance to the general election on June 14. The hopefuls are: Emily Annette, Michael Dahl, Robert Durant, K Melinda Iverson, James Jackson, Diana King, Winona LaDuke, Karen M. Manypenny, Marvin Manypenny, Patrick Scott Sr., Terrance Tibbetts Sr. and Leonard Wadena.

Erma Vizenor resigned in January after clashing with other leaders on the council.
