Update: After making history this season, the Lady Thunderbirds fell to the team from the Monroe Community College. The score was 77 to 54.

The girls basketball team from United Tribes Technical College takes the court on Tuesday evening at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.

The Lady Thunderbirds drove 11 hours from Bismarck, North Dakota, to Overland Park, Kansas, for the game. It marks the first time that the team has played in the tourney.

“Some teams and tournament officials couldn’t believe we drove all that way, but the trip was a very fast one. We’re used to the road,” head coach Kia Herbel told United Tribes News in a post on Facebook.

The team is going up against the unbeaten Monroe Community College from Rochester, New York. The game will webcast at 6pm Central time.

“We had a goal to get our school’s first region championship," Herbel said. "Once accomplished, we had a goal to earn our first district championship and earn a trip to the national tournament. Now that we are here, we just want to play well.”
