The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas is threatening three former leaders with jail time and banishment.

Steve Cadue, Bobbi Darnell and Adolph Cadue, Jr., are accused of using federal burial assistance funds to subsidize payroll and other expenses Chairman Lester Randall announced in a press release. He also said the ex-council members falsified documents to cover up the misspending.

"During our investigation into these issues we have detailed egregious alteration of tribal records and gross mismanagement of tribal monies," Randall said. "This is an attempt to make those public officials accountable to the Kickapoo tribal membership for this wrongdoing."

Randall previously filed civil complaints against the Steve Cadue, a former chairman, and Darnell, a former treasurer. Those cases do not appear to be resolved.

Cadue, who served as chairman several times over the last 30 years, said that complaint was a political stunt cooked up by Randall. He told The Topeka Capital-Journal that he denies the new charges.

“We’ll wait for our day in court," Cadue told the paper.
