The National Advisory Council on Indian Education is holding its first meeting of 2016 next week.

The meeting takes place April 25-26 at Department of Education headquarters in Washington, D.C. Anyone who wishes to speak must file a letter by Wednesday, according to a notice that was published in the Federal Register on Monday. Comments can also be emailed to oese@ed.gov.

The meeting marks the first for the council since President Barack Obama announced four new members. Phyliss J. Anderson (Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians), Mandy Broaddus (Fort Peck Tribes), Dahkota Kicking Bear Brown (Wilton Rancheria) and Joely Proudfit (Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians descendant) joined the board in February.

Brown is the first young tribal member ever appointed to the council. He has earned accolades nationwide for his work in advancing educational and other opportunities for Native youth.

The National Advisory Council on Indian Education advises the Department of Education on issues affecting American Indian and Alaska Native students. More than 520,000 Native students attend public schools across the nation, according to the federal government.
