Leaders of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians voted to impeach Chief George Wickliffe on Tuesday.

The council sustained three complaints against Wickliffe, according to news reports. He was accused of misappropriating tribal funds, violating the constitution and approving payments without approval.

Wickliffe spoke for a few minutes at the impeachment hearing, The Tahlequah Daily Press reported. He disputed the allegations and said he did not take any money, The Tulsa World reported.

Wickliffe, who has served three terms as chief, has seven days to file an appeal.
