The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska acquired a firm with experience in federal government contracting.

KIRA provides facilities maintenance and base operations throughout the United States and overseas. It has won more than $1 billion in federal contracts, KTOO reported, and is now owned by Tlingit Haida Tribal Business Corporation, the tribe's economic arm.

“I am excited about this acquisition and its tremendous upside potential for the tribe. Overnight THTBC has become a major force in government contracting,” President Richard Peterson said in a press release.

KIRA is based in Boulder, Colorado, and its founder and president, Carlos Garcia, will remain on board. He was part of the 8(a) program at the Small Business Administration that is aimed at helping minority-owned, tribally-owned and other disadvantaged businesses with federal contracts.

THTBC was certified for the program last year, KTOO reported.
