Kevin P. Battise, a former chairman of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, passed away last week. He was 56.

Battise was first elected to the tribal council in 1998, Indian Country Today reported. He rose to the position of chair and defended the tribe's rights during a high-profile gaming and sovereignty battle with state authorities.

"The tribe lost a great leader, and his contributions to advance the tribe continue to be appreciated by many," a statement on Facebook read.

Battise was killed in a car accident on June 29, according to news reports. He was laid to rest on Thursday.
