Five die in car accident on the Rosebud Indian Reservation

CORN CREEK –– On Sunday, five members of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe were tragically killed in a head-on collision at the junction of Highways 44 and 63 near Corn Creek.

Social media posts and comments regarding the tragedy began on Sunday and by Monday morning, many were expressing their condolences and respects to family members who lost loved ones and prayers were made to those who have made their journey.

According to reports, seven persons in one vehicle turned onto Highway 63 in front of an oncoming car with three women traveling west on Highway 44. 5 of the 7 in the car were killed; including four adults and one toddler. One witness stated the individuals may not have been wearing seatbelts.

Among those killed in this tragic accident include; Jordyn Hespe, Jeanicida Bad Hand, Katie LaPointe, Kayden White Shield and her baby, Bryer Bad Hand.

In a written statement dated July 18, 2016, RST President, Willie Kindle, said, “On behalf of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, I would like to express my deepest condolences and heartfelt symapth to the families and friends affected by a horrific accident that occurred this past Sunday. It was very disheartening to hear the recent sad news of young lives taken so soon.”

“Let our Oyate come together and comfort the families and friends in need. I extend my prayer to bothe the deceased and the bereaved,” the tribal president closed.

The loss of one life on a reservation affects hundreds; the loss of five lives affects many thousands. The Rosebud Sioux Nation has rallied in support of the families.
