The Yakama Nation of Washington is seeking to expand its utility company.

Yakama Power is negotiating to buy Benton REA for an estimated $24 million, The Yakima Herald-Republic reported. If the deal goes through, the tribe's company would acquire additional power lines, infrastructure and customers on the reservation.

“We’re trying to figure out a way, since we are both public utilities, to provide the lowest cost electricity on the Yakama Reservation," general manager Ray Wiseman told the paper.

Benton REA has agreed to put the issue to a vote of its members, the paper reported. The election is expected to take place this fall.

Yakama Power started in 2006, according to its website. Customers include Yakama Forest Products, the Legends Casino and other tribal operations. The utility also provides service to residential clients.
