Comanche Nation schedules runoff vote over candidate's objection

The Comanche Nation of Oklahoma has scheduled a run-off election for a business committee seat.

But the candidate for the seat is disputing the need for the run-off, The Lawton Constitution reported. Jonathan Poahway, the incumbent, contends he already won the seat during his July 27 match-up against Jackie Codopony Sr.

According to official results that were published in the August issue of the tribe's newsletter, Poahway received 48.92 percent of the vote. Since that isn't a majority, the election board scheduled the run-off.

But Poahway believes the election board should not have counted ballots in which no candidate was selected. When those are removed from the tally, he says he won the seat with a majority of the vote.

Poahway's petition on the matter will be heard at a special council meeting on August 27, The Comanche Nation News reported on Facebook. That happens to be the same day as the run-off election.
