The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians will be able to secure federal funds after President Barack Obama signed a declaration disaster that included the Wisconsin tribe.

The tribe was hit hard by storms and floods last month. Some 46 homes were damaged or destroyed, leaving dozens of families without permanent housing.

The declaration signed by Obama will help the tribe recover from the disaster. It only covers the first round of storms that hit the reservation but the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicated that additional assistance is possible pending further assessments.

Under amendments to the Stafford Act that were signed into law by Obama, tribes can seek disaster declarations directly from the federal government. Previously, tribes had to rely on states for assistance.
