The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee has announced additional meetings.

The NAGPRA Review Committee is charged with monitoring the federal government's implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. The panel also hears disputes that arise under the 1990 law, like a recent case involving an ancestor that the Obama administration plans to repatriate to the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe in Nevada.

With a December 6 teleconference already on the schedule, the seven-member panel plans to meet in Colorado in March 2017 and host another teleconference in July 2017. Notice of the additional meetings was published in the Federal Register on Friday.

The National Park Service administers the National NAGPRA Program. The agency recently announced four grants, totaling nearly $287,800, to help further the return of ancestors and artifacts to tribes and Native communities.

"For over 25 years since the enactment of NAGPRA, we have made great strides working with our partners to return sacred objects and ancestral remains to native peoples," NPS Director Jon Jarvis said in a September 29 press release. "These grants will continue to support the work of dedicated individuals, Indian tribes, and institutions."

The 1990 law requires federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funds to complete inventories of their collections of ancestral remains and artifacts.
