Native candidate in South Dakota gets big boost from President Barack Obama

South Dakota Democratic Party on SoundCloud: Red Dawn Foster Obama Endorsement

A small legislative race in South Dakota is getting some attention from a big name.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday endorsed Red Dawn Foster for South Dakota's House District 27. In a message to voters in an area that includes the Pine Ridge Reservation, he said the Democratic candidate "has my back and yours."

"This election isn't just about defeating extreme Republicans candidates, it's also about electing strong Democrats like Red Dawn Foster," Obama said in an audio announcement.

Obama's endorsement is an attempt to bring an all-Democratic slate to House District 27. The district's two seats are currently held by a Democrat and a Republican.

Foster, who is Oglala Sioux and Navajo, and fellow Democrat Jim Bradford, who is also Oglala, are among the five candidates on the ballot in the district.

The pair are joined by two Republicans: Liz May, who is the incumbent, and Steve Livermont. Everette McKinley, an independent, rounds out the ballot.

Only top two vote-getters on November 8 will win the House District 27 seats so Obama's endorsement could help Foster cross the finish line.

"I'm humbled and honored to be receiving President Obama’s endorsement," Foster said in a press release. "I am committed to working for the betterment of all people in District 27 and will continue working hard to carry my progressive agenda forward.

The Democratic incumbent in District 27 is Kevin Killer, who is Oglala and Kiowa, but he is running for the Senate seat in this cycle. The seat is held by Bradford but he decided to run for the House this year.
